The Salaried Course
The salaried route to QTS is best suited to applicants with significant UK school-based experience, ideally in a teaching capacity.
Salaried trainees will start teaching their own classes right from the start of the course, and will have a much higher teaching load than the fee-paying (unsalaried) trainees.
You will be employed as a an unqualified teacher and receive a salary as you train (£22,601 in 2025-2026). Your school will also pay your tuition fees for you. At the end of the course you will receive Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
Salaried trainees do not typically complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) element of the course due to their higher teaching load. However, some salaried trainees choose to opt to study for the PGCE and pay Mid Essex ITT a fee of £1,750 (2025-2026 fees).
Below is a summary of the route:
- Salaried trainees are able to teach up to 90% of a full timetable from day one
- Salaried trainees can be left alone in the classroom, but will have two formal observations per week
- Salaried trainees will have a mentor and a weekly mentor meeting
- Salaried trainees need to attend Core Training at Notley High School on a Thursday morning
- Salaried trainees would also need to attend subject sessions on a Thursday afternoon
