Well-Being

At Mid Essex ITT, we believe that trainee well-being is one of the most essential aspects of the training year, and this is why we continue to make this our highest priority.

We believe that it is important to support our trainees in any way that we can in order to make them resilient, empathetic and robust individuals. We employ a range of strategies that we believe allow our trainees to focus on the demands of the training and academic rigour. You can read about these in detail by downloading our Well-being Booklet.

We also undertake regular training where possible. In late 2023 and early 2024 members of the leadership team underwent training in understanding the Menopause run by the National College, and also in Mental Health First Aid, by taking a course accredited by Mental Health First Aid England.

The Mid Essex ITT Curriculum

What are the aims of the Mid Essex curriculum?

The overarching intent of the Mid Essex curriculum is to produce committed, optimistic, research-engaged and effective secondary teachers. Our curriculum map and assessment indicators show how the content has been judiciously chosen to reflect these core values.

CORE

The Mid Essex Curriculum, the Core Content Framework (CCF) and the Teachers’ Standards

Our curriculum fully incorporates the five core areas of the CCF - behaviour management, pedagogy, curriculum, assessment and professional behaviours - which mirror the eight Teachers’ Standards. We have also introduced our own components to the curriculum, going beyond the CCF.

Trainees are assessed against our Assessment Indicators during the course and then assessed against the Teachers’ Standards at the end of the course.

Framework

What informs the content of the Mid Essex curriculum?

Much of the curriculum has been designed with the intention that knowledge and experience are blended and developed through classroom practice. Trainees are taught the essential declarative knowledge (‘learnt that...’ statements) they need to know at our core training.

In addition, trainees are set both School-Based and Stage-Based tasks. Each subject discipline has its own identity, which is informed through content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge.

How is the curriculum sequenced?

Our curriculum has been judiciously chosen and sequenced so that it flows coherently and is divided into distinct stages. Our three compulsory days of induction training in July provide trainees with a firm grounding in the professionalism component of the CCF, as well as providing them with all statutory training to ensure that they are ready to start in their placement schools.

In the early stages of training - ‘Secure Foundations’ - our curriculum is front loaded with high expectations and behaviour, moving on to pedagogy and later on to curriculum and assessment. Our spiralised curriculum ensures these are revisited during the ‘Revisit and Practise’ stage, when trainees are at their B placement, and again in the final term.

As trainees develop their general and subject-specific pedagogical knowledge and combine this with the opportunity to apply this knowledge in school, more challenging content and a broader range of topics are introduced.

This is combined with an increasing teaching load so that trainees have more opportunities to apply what they have learnt in core training in the classroom.   In addition, each subject discipline has its own identity which is informed through both content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge.

Each subject has its own subject handbook to reflect this and its own curriculum determined by the Lead Subject Tutor.

Sequence

In addition, trainees are set both School-Based and Stage-Based tasks relating to applying the ‘Learn How’ to statements from the Core Content Framework in their teaching.  Furthermore.  Each subject discipline has its own curriculum intent and identity and is lead by a Lead Subject Tutor who provides weekly Subject Expert Training deconstructing the mornings core training through a subject lens.

Our curriculum has been judiciously chosen and sequenced so that it flows coherently and is divided into distinct stages. Our two compulsory days of induction training in July provide trainees with a firm grounding in the professionalism component of the CCF, as well as providing them with all statutory training to ensure that they are ready to start in their placement schools from September.

Welcome from the new Director

Having trained with Mid Essex ITT in 2007, I feel that this has given me a solid grounding on which to build a successful teaching career. Over the course of the last 11 years, I have had many exciting opportunities and roles. I started my career based in the English department at Notley High School & Braintree Sixth Form where I was then promoted to a Lead Teacher. This experience afforded me with the opportunity to become a Head of Year where I was fortunate enough to watch the most wonderful year group of students become independent, talented and ambitious young adults. During this time, I also completed my Masters in Educational Research. This has made me see the importance of reflecting on your own practice throughout your career, not just during your formative years. After seeing my year group leave, I became Assistant Headtecaher and the Head of Braintree Sixth Form, which has now lead me to this role.

I feel extremely fortunate to be in a position by which by I can play a part in developing our future teachers. I am excited to work with the talented and experienced team already in place at Mid Essex ITT and look forward to building on the success of the previous Programme Manager. I am joining Mid Essex ITT at an exciting time following our recent outstanding Ofsted report and I also look forward to further developing relationships with the Mid Essex ITT partnership schools.

There has never been a more exciting time to step in to the world of teaching and I can't think of a better place to train than with Mid Essex ITT and their plethora of outstanding host schools.

What do we offer our Mentors?

 What_does_MEITT_offer_to_Mentors_Sept_2024.jpg

Mid Essex ITT really do value the contributions that our Mentors make, and the pivotal role they play in supporting our trainees on their journey to becoming qualified teachers.

Over the course of the academic year, we ensure that we offer a wide range of developmental opportunities for our Mentors. Being a Mentor is not only a hugely-rewarding experience, but is also great CPD for future positions.

We offer our Mentors:

  • the opportunity to work with key stakeholders across our partnership schools;
  • the chance to attend our weekly central and core training sessions;
  • access to our staff development library;
  • the chance to contribute to our central training;
  • opportunity to train in instructional coaching;
  • access to regional Subject Forums;
  • access to Teacher Educator and Mentoring Zone (TEMZ) through NASBTT;
  • collaboration with subject colleagues across partnership schools, and
  • access to the new Regional Mentor Training programme for 2022-2023

Below is a lovely testimonial from one of our Mentors:

"Being a mentor was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my teaching career to date. I was able to nurture and support my trainee as they progressed over the course of the year. I was incredibly proud to watch the teacher that they have become and to know that I was a part of this. I was also provided with ample support from Mid Essex ITT, and this opportunity certainly provided me with some key skills that have been beneficial when applying for my next middle leadership post" – English Mentor, Notley High School.
